Julius Rosenwald’s children and the Adler family rescued 300 members of their relatives from Nazi Germany and helped settle and educate them in America.
From 1915 to 1932, over 5,300 Rosenwald schools were constructed in the South for African American children.
In 1954, when the Supreme Court declared segregation in education unconstitutional, Rosenwald schools became obsolete and abandoned.
The National Trust for Historical Preservation declared 100 schools National Treasures, and in partnership with former students and local communities, the schools are being restored to serve community needs.
The Michigan Boulevard Garden Apartments is being restored to its original mixed use of residential and retail space. Now called the Rosenwald Courts, this historical redevelopment will be completed by the end of 2016.
